Nigeria Celebrates International Day of the Midwife 2023

The International Day of the Midwife was celebrated in Nigeria, recognizing the critical contributions of midwives as pillars of strength in maternal and newborn health. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, underscored the importance of midwives in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates and strengthening the primary healthcare system.

The celebration aligns with the government's renewed hope agenda, prioritizing women, children, and families in national development. The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, led by Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, reaffirmed its commitment to investing in midwifery as a means to ensure safe motherhood and healthier children.

The government aims to empower frontline health workers and expand access to quality care, ensuring no woman is left behind. Furthermore, the president declared 2026 as the Year of Family Social Development, emphasizing the need for resilient family foundations for national progress.
