Alonso and Arbeloa Clash as Chelsea Meets Fulham

Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa, former teammates at Liverpool, will meet as opposing managers when Chelsea faces Fulham in the Premier League. This match marks their first encounter in managerial roles, with Alonso in charge of Chelsea and Arbeloa managing Fulham, both having returned to England in July 2023.

Their friendship began at Anfield nearly two decades ago and continued at Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, where they were part of Spain's golden generation that won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships. Alonso joined Liverpool in 2004, becoming a key midfielder, while Arbeloa arrived in 2007 as a defender.

They played together 262 times for club and country. Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez noted that Alonso's transition to coaching was more predictable than Arbeloa's, highlighting Alonso's tactical awareness during his playing days.

Alonso previously managed Bayer Leverkusen, achieving a league and cup double in 2024.
