China Handover $56.5M ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja

On Tuesday, a formal ceremony was held in Abuja to mark the handover of a newly completed $56.5 million headquarters complex to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) by the People's Republic of China. The event was attended by senior Nigerian officials, including Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, and ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Alieu Tourai.

China's Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, described the project as a symbol of deepening cooperation and shared development goals between China and ECOWAS, which has evolved over three decades based on mutual respect and benefit. The complex is designed to enhance operational capacity and support regional integration efforts.

Tourai emphasized the strategic importance of the headquarters in addressing regional challenges and promoting economic opportunities, particularly in agriculture. The project underscores China's commitment to sustainable partnerships in Africa, rejecting claims of hidden conditions in its engagements.
