Chinese Billboards Honor Scientists Over Advertisements

In a notable cultural shift, Chinese businesses have begun voluntarily replacing commercial billboards with tributes to prominent scientists. This trend started in Shandong province, particularly in Single County, where on August 7, a large illuminated portrait of rocket scientist Qian Xuesen was installed on the exterior of the Single County Yinzuo shopping mall.

The display, measuring 7.8 metres high and 5.6 metres wide, included a quote from Qian encouraging perseverance. The mall's operations manager, Zhu Wei, stated that the initiative aimed to inspire younger generations to remember the contributions of these scientists.

Following this, other commercial venues in Shandong began showcasing similar tributes, featuring scientists such as Deng Jiaxian, Qian Sanqiang, and Guo Yonghuai. The displays have received significant online approval, with reports indicating over 100,000 likes for the initial display within 24 hours, prompting calls for similar initiatives across other regions.
