Cholera Outbreak Claims 40 Lives in Borno State

Cholera has resulted in 40 deaths and over 3,000 infections in Borno State, Nigeria. Official reports indicate that from May 1 to May 27, 2026, 27 people died, and 2,715 were infected.

The situation worsened in Maiduguri and Jere, where half of the cases were concentrated. Brig Gen Abba Kyari reported that health facilities are overwhelmed, with patients being treated on the floor due to the influx.

Many patients, particularly women and children, are showing severe symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. Health workers are struggling to manage the situation, with reports of patients refusing to go to hospitals due to fear of inadequate care.

The outbreak is exacerbated by poor living conditions and open defecation, which facilitate the spread of the disease. The primary source of infection is contaminated water and food.

The Medical Doctors Without Borders (MSF) declined to comment on the situation when contacted.
