Anek Warns Civilian Casualty Claims Threaten Air Ops Legitimacy

On Tuesday in Abuja, Air Marshal Sundai Anek, the Chief of Air Staff of the Nigerian Air Force, warned that allegations of civilian casualties could undermine the legitimacy of military air operations and public confidence in the force. During the maiden seminar on civilian harm mitigation, Anek stated that the Nigerian Air Force remains committed to professional and responsible air operations.

He underscored the necessity for a stronger institutional understanding of civilian protection principles, particularly in light of past allegations of civilian casualties during military operations. Anek highlighted that operational success should not only be measured by tactical achievements but also by the extent to which civilian lives and property are protected.

He urged military personnel to enhance target verification processes and thoroughly assess operational outcomes, especially when missions do not go as planned. The Nigerian Air Force has introduced initiatives aimed at strengthening civilian protection and improving transparency in military operations.
