Climate Change: Many Residents Displaced, Properties Destroyed As Floods Submerge Sokoto Communities

Heavy flooding caused by torrential downpour on August 15 has displaced many residents and destroyed properties in Sokoto communities, particularly in Dandin Mahe Ward, Shagari Local Government Area. The flood submerged houses, farmland, and infrastructure, leaving hundreds of families homeless and millions of dollars worth of property destroyed.

A resident, Malam Umaru, described the situation as worse than previous years, with water even submerging a mosque and school. Community leaders have appealed to the Sokoto state government, NEMA, and other relevant authorities for relief support, proper drainage systems, flood barriers, and early warning systems.

A delegation was dispatched to assess the damage, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society provided temporary shelter, but many displaced residents remain in makeshift shelters, fearing further disasters. The community is anxiously awaiting relief materials and interventions to prevent a recurrence of this tragedy.
