Super Falcons Coach Madugu Apologizes After World Cup Miss

Justine Madugu, the coach of the Super Falcons, issued an apology to Nigerians following the team's failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Falcons lost 2-1 to South Africa in a Confederation of African Football play-off match held in Morocco on Thursday.

Madugu acknowledged that errors and poor finishing contributed to the defeat, stating, “We came, did the best that we could, but our best was not good enough.” The Falcons had previously missed an automatic World Cup spot after losing 1-0 to Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-finals but were given another chance through the play-off. South Africa capitalized on Nigeria's defensive mistakes, with Thembi Kgatlana scoring in the 56th minute and Refiloe Jane adding another goal in the 77th minute.

Christy Ucheibe scored a penalty for Nigeria in added time, but they could not equalize. Madugu emphasized the team's inability to convert chances and attributed the defensive lapses to individual errors.
