Super Falcons Coach Madugu Apologizes After World Cup Exit

Justine Madugu, the head coach of the Super Falcons, has publicly apologized to Nigerians and accepted full responsibility for the team's failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This follows Nigeria's elimination from World Cup contention after a 2-1 defeat to South Africa during the Confederation of African Football play-off held in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Falcons had previously missed an automatic World Cup ticket due to a 1-0 quarter-final loss to Cameroon, marking their worst-ever finish in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and ending a streak of reaching at least the semi-finals in every previous edition. In the match against South Africa, Thembi Kgatlana scored first, followed by Refiloe Jane, who was later sent off after a VAR review.

Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty in stoppage time, but Nigeria could not equalize. This defeat means Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since its inception in 1991.
