Akwa Ibom Champions Chess Growth at South-South Event

The South-South Chess Championship concluded in Uyo from September 3 to 6, 2026, with Elder Paul Bassey, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, attending the closing ceremony as Special Guest. He praised the event's organizers and participants, reaffirming the state government's commitment to developing chess and other sports under Governor Umo Eno's administration.

Bassey highlighted the establishment of a standalone Ministry of Sports aimed at enhancing support for athletes and sporting disciplines. He expressed admiration for chess players, emphasizing the sport's intellectual demands and strategic nature.

The championship featured participants from various South-South states across different age categories, providing a platform for young talents. Notable prize winners included Ekpeyong Ekerette as Best Indigene, Ochemba Donald Udoma as Best Junior, and Akinrogunde Clinton as the Open category winner.

The event was praised by tournament organizers and officials from the Nigeria Chess Federation for the Akwa Ibom State Government's support, which was crucial for the tournament's success.
