Nigeria Ranks Fifth at 2026 Commonwealth Games

At the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Team Nigeria has achieved a remarkable fifth overall position on the medals table, leading Africa with a total of 19 medals: 10 gold, six silver, and three bronze. This performance places Nigeria behind only Australia, England, Canada, and hosts Scotland, while surpassing other Commonwealth nations like India and New Zealand.

The success is attributed to strong performances in athletics, para powerlifting, and weightlifting. Noteworthy achievements include Samuel Ogazi winning gold in the men’s 400 metres and Nathaniel Ezekiel securing gold in the men’s 400 metres hurdles.

Earlier, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi won the men’s shot put title, and Tobi Amusan, despite injury, earned bronze in the women’s 100 metres hurdles. The National Sports Commission (NSC) officials praised the athletes for their discipline and resilience.

Nigeria's fifth-place ranking is significant given the competitive nature of the Games, with Australia leading the medal standings.
