Nigeria Aims for Record Golds at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Nigerian athletes will participate in 10 sports at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which officially begins today. The National Sports Commission aims for a record 20 gold medals, surpassing the previous best of 12 from Birmingham 2022.

Team Nigeria completed a three-week high-performance training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, prior to the Games. The para powerlifting team, led by captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo, a reigning Commonwealth champion and two-time Paralympic gold medallist, will kick off Nigeria's campaign.

She is joined by Rita Ferdinand, who recently equalled the women's world record with a lift of 154 kg. Tobi Amusan seeks her third consecutive gold in the women's 100m hurdles, while Kayinsola Ajayi arrives after equalling the Nigerian men's 100m national record.

However, long jump star Ese Brume has withdrawn due to injury, with Ruth Usoro replacing her. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will lead Nigeria's challenge in the men's shot put.
