Ochonogor Wins Long Jump at National Trials in Lagos

Prestina Ochonogor triumphed in the women's long jump at the National Trials for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, held at YabaTech Sports Complex in Lagos on Sunday, achieving a leap of 6.57 meters. This event took place in the absence of Ese Brume, the national record holder, who is currently based in the United States.

Ochonogor's performance was sufficient to secure her position in Nigeria's competitive athletics scene. In the men's triple jump, Olaoluwa Akindunbi delivered a standout performance, clearing 16.08 meters, marking a new personal best.

Additionally, Vivian Obadiah from Delta State set a new personal best in the women's 5,000 meters, finishing with a time of 17:24.85. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, led by President Tonobok Okowa, opened the trials and encouraged athletes to give their best, assuring them of the federation's full support.

The event faced delays due to the late arrival of some athletes, prompting a call for patience from Abubakar Ladan Zurmi, the federation's first vice president.
