Gridlock Strands Commuters on Abuja-Kaduna Highway

Commuters on the Abuja-Kaduna highway are facing significant delays due to a severe gridlock, with reports indicating that hundreds of vehicles are stuck. Ismaila Yakubu, a commuter, stated that some motorists have been trapped since 2 AM.

Despite the presence of officers from the Federal Road Safety Corps, they have been unable to manage the situation effectively. An officer mentioned that a pothole near a bridge is causing accidents and hindering traffic flow.

The officer also indicated that they have communicated the need for palliative work on this section to the contractor, Infiouest Nigeria Limited, but no action has been taken. The Abuja-Kaduna highway has been under construction for eight years, with little progress compared to other sections.

The heavy traffic volume, especially during Sallah festivals, has led to frequent gridlocks, with commuters previously spending days on the road. Motorists are urging the government to expedite road improvements, with a promise to complete the work by November this year.
