EFCC Chief Identifies Contract Fraud as Key Corruption

On Thursday, during a two-day induction program organized by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms for the Chief Executive Officers, Chairmen, and members of the Governing Board of the South-South Development Commission in Abuja, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), stated that contract fraud is the most prevalent form of corruption in Nigeria's public sector.

He cautioned public officials against using their positions for personal enrichment, emphasizing that public office should safeguard national resources. Olukoyede highlighted that contract fraud often involves manipulation of procurement processes and can lead to significant financial losses, amounting to billions of naira annually.

He outlined various forms of corruption, including outright theft, bribery, and procurement fraud. The EFCC was established in 2003 to combat economic and financial crimes, and Olukoyede acknowledged challenges such as limited resources and delays in prosecuting high-profile cases.

He urged newly appointed officials to resist the temptation of personal gain from public resources.
