Lagos State Government Denies Resumption of Sanitation Exercise

The Lagos State Government has officially denied reports suggesting the resumption of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, clarified that no official statement has been issued regarding the commencement date of the exercise.

This clarification comes amid rising public interest in waste management due to concerns over clogged drains and indiscriminate waste disposal in the state. The monthly sanitation exercise, which was traditionally held on the last Saturday of each month from 7 AM to 10 AM, was suspended in November 2016 following legal restrictions on movement during the exercise.

The Lagos State Government has repeatedly announced plans to resume the exercise, with Wahab emphasizing the importance of sanitation as a lifestyle rather than a seasonal campaign. The government is engaging stakeholders to determine a suitable schedule for the exercise while continuing to implement complementary waste management strategies, including enhanced refuse collection and public education campaigns to reduce flooding risks.
