Alleged Coup Plot Funding Traced to Timipre Sylva

Security agencies in Nigeria are investigating an alleged coup plot that reportedly involves former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva, who is accused of contributing ₦785 million to fund the conspiracy. The investigation has traced a total of ₦835 million to two private companies, with Purpl Wave Limited identified as a key player.

The funds were allegedly intended to support a plan to disrupt the presidential inauguration scheduled for May 29, 2023, which was ultimately suspended due to insufficient logistics. The plot is said to have been reactivated for 2025, with Colonel Alhassan Maaji identified as the mastermind.

Security sources indicate that the plotters aimed to seize control of key government locations, including the presidential villa and military barracks. As part of the investigation, various military and police officials, along with civilians, have been detained, and significant weaponry has been recovered, including anti-aircraft guns and RPGs.
