Court Admits Contested Confessions in Patience Jonathan Aides' Jewelry Theft Trial

The Bayelsa State High Court has allowed contested confessions in the trial of eight domestic workers of former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, accused of stealing jewelry worth hundreds of millions. The confessions were admitted despite claims of torture during their extraction.

The trial, which began in 2019, has been marred by delays, including the reduction of co-accused following a death. The defendants have alleged torture and denial of legal counsel.

Sahabi Liman, one of the accused, died in custody in 2025 due to prolonged illness. The former First Lady's legal team has been accused of stalling proceedings.

The trial has raised concerns about human rights abuses and the administration of justice.
