Court Hears Suit to Halt Oyo LG Elections in 2026

On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja commenced hearings on a suit filed by businessman and politician Akinloye Oyeniyi, represented by counsel Ayo Omoleaupen, seeking to prevent the 2026/2027 local government elections in Oyo State. Justice Obiora Egwuatu presided over the case, ordering the plaintiff to serve the originating summons to the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The suit contests OYSIEC's revised timetable issued on March 4, 2026, particularly regarding its proposed verification and screening of candidates. Oyeniyi argues that OYSIEC's powers are limited to verifying documents of nominated candidates and that the disputed timetable infringes on his rights to contest and vote.

He seeks a declaration that OYSIEC lacks the authority to screen candidates and requests an order restraining INEC from releasing the certified register of voters to OYSIEC until the contested items are removed. The case is adjourned until September 10, 2026, for a report on service of the court processes.
