Court Orders Lawyers at All Nigerian Police Stations

On a recent Saturday, a court in Abuja ruled that the Nigerian Police Force must deploy qualified lawyers to all police stations across Nigeria. This decision stems from a lawsuit filed by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) against the Police Service Commission.

The court determined that police officers cannot perform legal duties or represent the Nigerian Police Force in civil proceedings unless they are properly appointed as legal practitioners. The judgment addresses longstanding concerns regarding the qualifications of police officers handling legal responsibilities without formal legal training.

The court emphasized the need for compliance with the Nigerian Police Act 2020 and the standards of legal practice. The NBA described the ruling as a significant step toward reforming police operations and ensuring adherence to constitutional safeguards.
