Governor Otu Urges Lawyers to Defend Democracy in C'River

During the 2026 Bar Week held in Calabar, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu urged lawyers to actively defend democracy against unconstitutional actions. In his address, he reaffirmed his administration's commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting accountability in governance.

Deputy Governor Peter Odei highlighted the essential role of lawyers as custodians of civil rights, urging them to challenge unconstitutional actions and resist attempts to undermine justice. Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Calabar Branch, Enom Amatei, criticized the growing disregard for the rule of law in Nigeria, citing disobedience to court orders as a threat to judicial independence.

He called on lawyers to be courageous and proactive in safeguarding democracy. Paul Ebiala, part of the planning committee, described the Bar Week as a platform to renew commitment to legal ideals.

The event was praised for its organization, with commendations from notable figures including Joe Agi, SAN.
