Police Detain Theatre Assistant for Unauthorized Surgery

The Cross River Police Command has detained a 33-year-old theatre assistant named Bassey Bassey over allegations of conducting an unauthorized hernia surgery on a 60-year-old man at a private clinic in Ekori, Yakurr LGA, on September 8. The patient, whose name remains undisclosed, experienced complications after the surgery and was discharged the same day.

On September 11, at approximately 4 p.m., Bassey took the patient to Ugep General Hospital due to these complications. Family members of the patient attempted to mob Bassey at the hospital around 9 p.m., raising concerns about his professional qualifications and involvement in the surgery.

Police intervened to prevent the mob action and took Bassey into protective custody at Ugep Police Division. During initial questioning, Bassey claimed he performed the procedure in the absence of his principal.

The police are currently verifying his qualifications and the circumstances of the surgery, while also investigating the cause of the patient's complications. No conclusions regarding criminal liability have been reached yet.
