Cross River Police Chief Bans Extortion of Motorists

Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, issued a warning to police officers prohibiting the extortion of motorists and commercial transport operators during stop-and-search operations. He clarified that no officer is authorized to demand or solicit payments from drivers or riders.

This warning was prompted by renewed complaints regarding alleged extortion by police personnel in Calabar and other areas of the state. Ordue, represented by CSP Azenda Peter, the Divisional Police Officer of Atakpa Police Division, addressed transport stakeholders in Calabar, advising them to report any officer who demands money.

He reiterated that while extortion is prohibited, motorists must still adhere to traffic laws and police directives. ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the Police Public Relations Officer, supported this by stating that violations would be addressed through legal procedures.

Ordue also reminded police personnel of their duty to maintain professionalism and integrity, assuring that credible allegations of misconduct would be properly investigated. The meeting included representatives from the Unified Commercial Drivers Association and the Tricycle Owners Association.
