Cross River Police Launch Operation Velvet Marine Against Piracy

The Cross River Police Command has initiated a specialized maritime security operation called Operation Velvet Marine to address piracy, sea robbery, smuggling, and other crimes on the state’s waterways. Launched on Friday at the Dolphin Marine Base in Calabar, the operation is a response to a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at strengthening maritime security and limiting criminal activities.

CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue emphasized the importance of professional conduct and human rights adherence among Marine Police personnel, who will work closely with the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Ports Authority, and National Inland Waterways Authority. State Marine Officer CSP Frankline Mbah stated that the operation will include daily visibility patrols, intelligence-led operations, and engagement with riverine communities.

The operation will cover key waterways, including the Calabar Channel and Qua River, and aims to enhance security for commuters and legitimate maritime businesses. Operation Velvet Marine will be sustained throughout the Ember Season and beyond.
