CSO coalition warns against manipulation, militarisation of Edo by-elections

The Coalition Observer Groups Nigeria has issued a warning against the alleged manipulation and militarization of the upcoming Edo Central senatorial and Ovia federal constituency by-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025. The group expressed concerns over reports suggesting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may repeat irregularities witnessed during the September 2024 governorship election in the state.

They highlighted the use of duplicate result sheets and questionable collation practices in 2024, which eroded public trust in the commission. The coalition called on INEC to ensure a free and fair election, condemning any threats or restrictions on opposition party agents accessing collation centers.

They emphasized the need for INEC to uphold its legal and moral obligations to prevent manipulation and intimidation, stating that the world is watching and public confidence is at stake.
