Customs Seize 48 Endangered Animals in Kano and Jigawa

On August 25, 2026, the Kano/Jigawa Customs Area Command intercepted 48 endangered wildlife species, marking a significant achievement in wildlife protection. The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Controller of Customs Usman Adamu, disclosed this during a briefing at the Customs House in Bompai, Kano.

The intercepted animals included 15 primates such as chimpanzees, gorillas, and bush babies, along with wild cats like civets and caracals, and 25 wild birds including greater bustards and rock fowls. Additionally, two albino crocodiles and a honey badger were seized.

Three suspects were arrested and handed over to the Special Wildlife Office of the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters for further action. Adamu stated that this interception is believed to be the largest and most diverse single seizure of wildlife in the history of the Nigeria Customs Service and possibly in the West African sub-region.

He emphasized the command's commitment to protecting biodiversity and enforcing customs laws, with total seizures and detentions from July 2026 to date valued at over N2 billion.
