Nigerian Customs Officer Killed in Ogun Ambush, ₦3.32bn Smuggled Goods Seized

In a tragic incident, Mustapha Akiyod, an Assistant Superintendent of Customs, was fatally shot by suspected smugglers during an ambush in Ogun State on February 3, 2026. The Nigeria Customs Service confirmed the death and the seizure of ₦3.32 billion worth of smuggled goods, such as rice, sugar, vehicles, and drugs.

The Customs Service, particularly the Federal Operations Unit Zone, expressed deep regret over Akiyod's death and emphasized the dangers faced by officers enforcing border security. The Customs Command has intensified operations to combat smuggling activities, leading to significant seizures and arrests.

The intercepted items included foreign rice, sugar, vehicles, vegetable oil, and even drugs like cannabis. The agency also highlighted its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria's borders despite the risks involved.
