Daily Trust Foundation Trains Journalists in Storytelling

The Daily Trust Foundation organized a virtual training session focused on narrative storytelling techniques, which attracted 30 journalists from various media houses across Nigeria. The session was facilitated by Dr.

Abdullahi Tasiu Abubakar, the Head of the Postgraduate Studies Department at St. George's University, London.

Dr. Abubakar meticulously explained the importance of narrative journalism, contrasting it with traditional reporting methods that often rely on the inverted pyramid structure.

He emphasized the need for journalists to create immersive, character-driven narratives that resonate deeply with audiences while remaining grounded in factual truth. The webinar highlighted the significance of narrative journalism in an era of information overload, aiming to keep audiences engaged by focusing on real people and complex issues such as migration, climate change, and economic policy.

Dr. Abubakar noted that this storytelling style has gained traction in Nigeria, with several international media organizations adopting long-form immersive reporting.

The session concluded with a Q&A segment addressing the challenges journalists face when practicing narrative journalism, particularly in hostile environments.
