Dangote Group's Lamu refinery to produce 1,000MW power

The Dangote Group's upcoming refinery in Lamu, Kenya, is set to generate approximately 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity, which is double the capacity of its Lagos refinery. Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, announced this on September 25, 2026, during a visit from Kenyan President William Ruto to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos.

The groundbreaking for the East Africa Oil Refinery in Lamu is scheduled for September 30, 2026. The refinery will have a crude-processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, and the power plant will not only meet the refinery's needs but also supply half of its capacity to the Kenyan government.

This initiative is part of Dangote Group's broader expansion strategy across Africa, which involved a capital expenditure of about $50 billion from 2020 to 2025, with plans to invest an additional $100 billion over the next five years. The group has appointed Engineers India Limited under a contract exceeding $450 million for project management and engineering services.
