Malawi Scorchers Reach Historic WAFCON Final with 3-1 Win

On Wednesday, Malawi's women's national football team, known as the Scorchers, achieved a historic milestone by defeating Algeria 3-1 in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026. This victory marks Malawi's first-ever appearance in a WAFCON final.

The Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, were instrumental in this success, scoring all three goals for Malawi. The match began favorably for the Scorchers when Algeria's Morgane Belkhiter received a red card early in the first half, reducing Algeria to 10 players.

Tabitha Chawinga opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with an acrobatic goal, followed by Temwa Chawinga doubling the lead just before halftime. Algeria managed to pull one back in the 60th minute through Ikram Adjabi, but Tabitha restored the two-goal advantage shortly after.

Despite Algeria's late attempts to score, Malawi held on to secure a 3-1 victory.
