NUT Plans Protest Over Alleged Union Polarization in Delta

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Delta State wing, announced plans for a peaceful protest scheduled for Thursday, following concerns over attempts to polarize the union and undermine the August 27, 2018 stakeholders’ agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASSUS). A letter dated July 24, signed by State Secretary Comrade Dan Basime, was sent to the Department of State Services (SSS) requesting security for the protest.

The NUT's decision to protest arose from a July 20 meeting convened by the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, which excluded the NUT despite its status as a principal stakeholder. The union emphasized that discussions on matters affecting it should not occur without its participation, warning that such actions could disrupt industrial peace.

The NUT reiterated that issues regarding trade unions and check-off dues are regulated by federal law and should not be altered unilaterally. The union expressed support for Governor Rt.
