Kaduna Governor Grants Clemency to 97 Inmates on Democracy Day

On June 12, 2026, Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai announced the granting of clemency to 97 inmates as part of the Democracy Day celebrations. This clemency was based on recommendations from the Kaduna State Advisory Council and involved outright releases, commutations of sentences, and payment of fines for selected inmates.

Governor El-Rufai emphasized the importance of second chances and the need for rehabilitated individuals to contribute positively to society. Additionally, he announced cash grants for beneficiaries to support their admission into Kaduna State skill acquisition vocational institutes located in Soba, Rigachikun, and Samaru Kataf.

These initiatives aim to equip former inmates with practical skills, enabling them to become self-reliant. The governor called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community organizations to assist in the reintegration process.

He also highlighted the significance of Democracy Day as a moment to honor the sacrifices made in Nigeria's democratic struggle.
