Justice Advocacy Calls for Accountability on Democracy Day

On Democracy Day, celebrated in Abuja, Nigeria, the Justice Advocacy Ltd Gte issued a statement urging leaders to ensure that democracy delivers justice, security, and accountability. Hame Jimoh, the founder and executive director of Soja, described Democracy Day as a symbol of the sacrifices made in Nigeria's struggle for freedom and justice.

The organization stressed that the legitimacy of democracy extends beyond merely conducting elections; it requires the government to protect human rights, uphold the rule of law, combat corruption, and guarantee access to justice. Despite nearly three decades of uninterrupted democratic rule, Nigeria continues to face significant challenges, including insecurity, kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, poverty, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, and gender-based violence.

Soja identified corruption as a major obstacle to national development and called for public officials to uphold their constitutional responsibilities. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to advancing human rights, anti-corruption advocacy, and promoting citizen participation in governance.
