Denmark's New Rules for Ukrainian Men Seeking Residence

Denmark's new immigration rules, passed by the Danish Parliament, require Ukrainian men aged 23 to 59 to provide documented proof of military exemption to obtain temporary residence permits. This amendment to the Ukraine Special Act will take effect on September 3, 2026.

It applies to all applications submitted on or after June 25, 2026, and also affects permits granted to men in that age group after that date, which may be revoked. The Danish authorities will contact affected individuals to allow them to submit comments before any permit cancellations.

Ukrainian men under 23 will receive permits valid until their 23rd birthday, after which they must meet the same military obligation criteria. However, those who applied for permits before June 25, 2026, and have been granted permits will not be affected by these changes.

The Danish government has stated that permits will not be revoked if it conflicts with Denmark's international obligations. This policy reflects ongoing discussions about how host countries manage Ukrainian men of fighting age amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
