Over 6,500 PHCs Non-Functional in Nigeria Despite Investments

Despite billions of naira invested by federal and state governments to revitalize Nigeria's primary healthcare system, at least 6,516 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) are non-functional, limiting access to basic medical services for millions, especially in rural areas. Data from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency indicates that Katsina has 442 non-functional PHCs, followed by Osun with 406.

Borno State faces a particularly dire situation, with Dr. Mala Wahab reporting that 358 facilities have been destroyed due to Boko Haram insurgency, leaving only 377 operational out of the original 735.

Governor Babagana Zulum's administration has increased functional PHCs from fewer than 100 to 377, with three more nearing completion. Despite infrastructure investments, chronic health worker shortages and ongoing insecurity continue to hinder service delivery across the country.
