Kano PHC Faces Equipment and Staff Shortages Despite Upgrades

Gama Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Gama Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area, Kano State, is struggling with equipment and staff shortages despite being revitalized under a program by the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). The facility has only one delivery bed, forcing women in labor to queue for access, which can lead to delays in care.

A midwife reported that they often have to improvise using an observation bed for deliveries. The PHC serves approximately 30,000 people but does not have a single medical doctor on staff, relying instead on nurses, midwives, and community health extension workers.

Deputy In-Charge Malam Danladi Muhammad stated that the facility was renovated about two years ago but noted that there was not much difference in its condition before and after the renovation. The revitalization has improved electricity and water supply, increasing patient influx, yet the facility continues to face critical shortages of skilled personnel and essential equipment.
