NEMA Urges Flood-Prone Residents to Heed Warnings

Mr. Zubaida Umar, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has advised residents in flood-prone communities across Nigeria to heed warning alerts and take proactive measures to safeguard lives and property as the rainy season intensifies.

He stated that the current period marks heightened rainfall, and he called for active community-level flood mitigation measures to minimize the impact of flooding. Umar urged residents to heed early warning information issued by relevant government agencies and to relocate to safer, higher ground whenever there is a flood threat.

He also advised the public to avoid driving or walking through floodwaters and to refrain from dumping refuse in drainage channels. Additionally, he encouraged prompt reporting of emergency situations to the appropriate authorities for timely response.

Umar reaffirmed NEMA's commitment to continue monitoring the flood situation across the country and to work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure timely humanitarian assistance for affected persons.
