Abia Deputy Governor's Alleged Threat to Tinubu Clarified

Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the Deputy Governor of Abia State, faced allegations of threatening President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and the upcoming 2027 general elections.

A viral statement attributed to Emetu suggested that the 2027 government would teach Tinubu a "bitter lesson" concerning Kanu's detention. However, Chukwudi Mba, Emetu's Chief Press Secretary, issued a clarification on February 13, 2026, stating that the language used in the viral statement did not reflect Emetu's character or leadership style.

Mba emphasized that Emetu remains committed to democratic engagement on political issues rather than personal attacks. The context of the statement comes amid ongoing discussions in the Southeast regarding Kanu's life imprisonment sentence for terrorism offenses, which was handed down on November 20, 2025.

Kanu's lawyer, Maxwell Opara, visited him in Sokoto on November 23, 2025, to address the sentencing.
