Diri Defends Bayelsa Power Project Amid Criticism

Douye Diri, the Governor of Bayelsa State, defended the state's Independent Power Project (IPP) during a weekly briefing on Thursday. He dismissed claims that the project, which includes a 60MW gas-fired turbine plant, is failing.

Diri explained that the plant is undergoing final touch-ups and the installation of critical safety devices to ensure it operates effectively. He assured residents that the project aims to provide 24-hour electricity to the state by April 10, 2026.

Diri criticized political opponents for politicizing the power project, stating that the people of Bayelsa should not be misled. He emphasized the importance of completing the project to avoid future failures.

Additionally, he mentioned a visit from former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on April 20, 2026, for the inauguration of the Oxbow Lake Agbura Road and the groundbreaking ceremony for the Angiama Oporoma Bridge.
