Nigerian DisCos Blame Low Generation for National Grid Collapses

Nigerian electricity distribution companies (DisCos) have attributed the recent collapses of the national power grid to low power generation levels. The grid collapsed three times in one month, with the latest incident occurring on January 27, following previous failures on December 29, 2025, and January 23, 2026.

DisCos confirmed outages and blamed the grid collapses for the total loss of supply across their networks. Sundai Oduntan, a spokesperson for DisCos, expressed concerns over the repeated grid failures and emphasized the ongoing challenges of insufficient power generation in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported that the recent incidents were triggered by voltage disturbances rather than total system failures. The disruptions have sparked discussions on the need for investments in the power sector's infrastructure to support Nigeria's electricity demand.
