Army Chief Warns Disinformation Threatens National Security

On Tuesday in Abuja, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, warned that disinformation is as dangerous as direct security threats. He emphasized that military operations cannot succeed without public support, which is directly linked to accurate media engagement.

Shaibu made these remarks during the opening of the Nigerian Army's public relations workshop for the first and second quarters of 2026. He stated that misinformation can undermine public confidence in security institutions and hinder military operations.

Major General Musa Etsu Ndagi, the Director of Army Public Relations, also spoke, stressing the critical role of media in modern warfare and the need for journalists to accurately cover military operations. Shaibu urged media organizations to foster public confidence in national security forces and counter misinformation, particularly in the context of ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, including insurgency and banditry.
