NMA Urges Doctors to Combat Quackery and Uphold Ethics

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on doctors to take the lead in combating quackery and unethical practices within the health sector. NMA President Prof Afekhide Omoti made this statement during the association’s First Ordinary National Executive Council meeting for the new National Officers’ Committee for 2026, held in Abuja.

The meeting, themed “Transforming Healthcare Practice in Nigeria: Building Trust, Accountability and Collaborative Excellence,” addressed ongoing concerns regarding healthcare quality, including the impact of unqualified practitioners and professional misconduct. Omoti stressed that while fighting external threats like quackery is essential, doctors must also maintain high ethical standards within their profession.

He noted that Nigeria's healthcare system faces significant challenges, including workforce shortages and declining public confidence. Dr Emeka Ayogu, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, highlighted the importance of professional standards and teamwork for patient safety.

Dr George Ebong, Chairman of the NMA Federal Capital Territory, expressed commitment to supporting the national leadership in advancing doctors’ welfare and professional excellence.
