Nigeria's UN Ambassador Calls for Total Nuclear Disarmament

Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, declared that Nigeria does not possess nuclear weapons and has no intention of developing them. Speaking at a high-level UN meeting on nuclear disarmament in New York, held to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Ibrahim emphasized that global security should not rely on nuclear arsenals.

He stated that the only way to prevent the use or threat of nuclear weapons is their complete elimination. Ibrahim expressed concern over the existence of thousands of nuclear warheads and the modernization efforts by nuclear-armed countries amid rising geopolitical tensions.

He reiterated Nigeria's commitment to international nuclear disarmament efforts and called on nuclear-weapon states to fulfill their disarmament obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Ibrahim highlighted that lasting security should be based on dialogue and cooperation among nations, rather than nuclear deterrence.
