AI and Dogs Unite for Early Cancer Detection in India

Scientists in India are exploring a novel cancer detection method called 'Dognosis', which combines artificial intelligence with the acute sense of smell of dogs to identify cancer from a patient's breath. The process involves patients breathing into a cotton mask for approximately ten minutes, after which the mask is sealed and sent to a laboratory.

There, AI analyzes the dogs' brain activity, respiration, and body language in response to the breath sample, converting these biological reactions into diagnostic data. Research indicates that dogs can be trained to detect various illnesses, including cancer and Parkinson's disease.

The integration of AI enhances the ability to standardize and scale this detection method into reliable medical data. For Nigeria's Department of Digital Innovation and Technology, such advancements present a blueprint for incorporating AI in healthcare, necessitating institutional support, collaboration between medical universities and tech hubs, and adherence to national digital standards.
