Government Urged to Enhance Social Security for Aging

During his 121st inaugural lecture at Lagos State University on April 21, 2026, Professor Olanrewaju Emmanuel Ajiboy emphasized the need for the Nigerian government to formulate policies that ensure social security and prompt pension payments to help citizens age gracefully. He highlighted that the nation's life expectancy continues to decline and recommended strengthening social security systems to provide financial security and robust access to pension schemes.

Ajiboy advocated for alleviating poverty, subsidizing healthcare, and ensuring access to geriatric care. He called for the implementation of national policies that guarantee the rights and dignity of older persons, including investment in public infrastructure and safe housing.

The professor also stressed the importance of maintaining physical and mental health, engaging in regular exercise, and fostering social connections to combat loneliness among the elderly. He concluded that aging should be embraced positively, focusing on health and well-being rather than societal pressures.
