Donald Duke Calls Nigeria's Petrol Subsidy a Scam

Donald Duke, the former governor of Cross River State and presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), has dismissed the ongoing petrol subsidy debate in Nigeria as a scam. He stated that petrol could be sold for approximately N200 per litre if Nigeria properly harnessed the various products derived from crude oil.

Duke's comments come as a counter to the proposals of President Bola Tinubu, who abolished the subsidy in May 2023, and other political figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who have differing views on the subsidy. Duke criticized the notion of a fuel subsidy, claiming it is a significant deception.

He pointed out that Nigeria, despite being rich in energy resources, remains energy-poor due to a lack of political will and effective management. He highlighted the country's flaring of natural gas and questioned why Nigeria exports gas to other West African nations while failing to meet its domestic energy needs.
