NSC Names Ikpeme Interim NFF Chief After Mass Leadership Resignations

The National Sports Commission has designated Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, formerly Deputy General Secretary at the Nigeria Football Federation, to serve as interim General Secretary and stabilize operations. Following Thursday's exodus—which saw NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau step down alongside General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi and several Executive Committee members—this appointment became necessary.

Dr Ademola Olajire, who held the position of Director of Media and Communications, now serves as interim Deputy General Secretary. To manage the void left by these departures, the NSC has halted all activities tied to the federation's elective congress initially scheduled for 27 September.

The commission indicated that comprehensive reforms throughout Nigerian football administration must occur before launching any new electoral process. These moves aim to restructure the federation's operational framework during this interim period.

The reorganization extends beyond NFF headquarters. Directives from the NSC require that leadership at the three principal football leagues—the NPFL, NNL, and NLO—cede operational oversight to their respective Chief Operating Officers.

This represents a significant redistribution of governance authority within Nigeria's football institutional structure. Ikpeme assumes federation stewardship amid notable institutional turbulence.

Through its intervention, the NSC seeks to establish novel governance standards and management practices before newly elected officials assume office. The commission has not yet disclosed specific timelines or requirements needed for restarting the electoral machinery.
