Thugs Disrupt Women's Rally in Rivers State, ADC Condemns

On Friday, a women's rally organized by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State's Elem Local Government Area was violently disrupted by thugs, allegedly led by a ward councillor whose name was not disclosed. The disruption occurred suddenly, scattering the crowd, pulling down canopies, and destroying sound equipment, which forced participants to flee for safety.

The councillor claimed that the event did not have the necessary approval from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be held. Ms.

Atosemi Oma Uwam, the national coordinator of the ADC Young Women’s Forum, condemned the attack, clarifying that the gathering was not a campaign event but aimed to encourage political engagement among women. She had received prior warnings against organizing the event under the ADC platform.

Uwam stressed that the group seeks to promote inclusivity and balance within party structures, asserting that young women should not have to beg for political rights.
