Oyo NCoS Reports Drug Offences Lead Inmate Custody Rates

The Oyo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service reported that drug-related offences are the primary reason for inmate custody in its facilities. DCC David Akadiri, Officer-in-Charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Agodi, Ibadan, made this statement during the third edition of the Inmates Debate Competition held on Wednesday.
The debate, themed “Drug Abuse is a Major Contributor to Criminal Behaviour,” featured Team A and Team B discussing the topic. Akadiri described drug abuse as detrimental, stating that the centre aims to reform inmates and prepare them for reintegration into society.
He highlighted the government's efforts in creating an enabling environment for rehabilitation, including establishing a school and workshops within the facility. Mr Aderibigbe Iyanu, representing Taming Wonder, noted that the debate showcased inmates' potential and abilities.
An Assistant Commander of Narcotics, Godwin Mercy from the NDLEA, urged the public to avoid drug abuse to minimize crime. Team B won the debate with 84 points, while Team A scored 80 points.
