D’Tigress Lose to Hungary in World Cup, Face Must-Win Match

On September 5, 2023, D’Tigress of Nigeria suffered their second consecutive defeat at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, losing 71-67 to Hungary in Berlin, Germany. This match followed their opening loss to South Korea, where they were defeated 99-81.

Hungary, needing a response after a heavy 99-53 loss to France, started strong and maintained control throughout the game. Juhasz and Takacs-Kiss led Hungary's attack, combining for 36 points, contributing to Hungary's first World Cup win in 28 years.

The Hungarian team showcased greater shooting efficiency and dominated the paint, scoring 42 points and securing 38 defensive rebounds, which limited Nigeria's second-chance opportunities. Although D’Tigress attempted a late comeback, Hungary maintained a lead of around 10 points for much of the second half.

Currently ranked eighth in the FIBA World Rankings, Nigeria faces a must-win game against France on September 7 to keep their hopes of advancing alive.
